Some more cucumbers.
These were started from seed. The markers are lost but one side was zucchini and the other was summer squash (next 4 photos are of these). We'll know what's what before long. :)
These next 2 photos are the butternut squash starts I planted in July. They are doing great!
This is row of cucumber seeds I put in late when I saw the empty spot. They're doing OK but I wish they'd hurry up. I want some cucumbers and it seems like they are very slow growing.
Beside them are these rutabagas. I didn't want rutabagas but we had this seed so use up so that's what we planted. I was pulling the leaves a little at a time and drying or steaming them but I quit. We've harvested a few rutabagas. I think more are ready.
These middle rows were nearly empty in last months photo. On the left and right are rutabaga. In the middle is beets. They were planted and not many came up so replanted and now doing better. The row left of the beets is radishes that were harvested and replanted. On the right is carrots that were planted and didn't come up so replanted and now are coming up. Close ups of the plants in the back of this garden are next.
This is a sunflower planted from seed. The one seen in the far back left of the photo above.
This is the back right. Some of these are sunflowers and the other plant we don't know. I thought it was a weed but decided to leave it and see what happened.
This is a closer up photo. You can see they grow as well as sunflowers but have a different leaf. Do you know what they are?
This is the same garden. A closer look at the last row of rutabaga. See how the mint has taken over? It's like a weed that you cannot contain. We didn't even plant it out here at all. And then a row of corn I planted when I saw how badly our corn row was growing in the front garden. This corn is doing much better than the front garden corn though still small for July.
This is the next garden and another row of corn. the rest of this garden is kohlrabi. This garden was growing some very large hollyhocks that we had to pull out because they were falling over. They were too big anyway, so big around they were shading everything with their huge leaves.More hollyhocks and kohlrabi. I was never happy with this kohlrabi garden. We planted and replanted and see this mint? It's hard to plant anything from seed because mint takes over and you can't get rid of it. I have dried a lot of mint already this year but there's heaps more. If you would like some you can come pick it.
I saw this kohlrabi needing harvested right in the middle of the garden (above). This the 6 or so we harvested earlier were plant starts and did much better than the seeds. I never liked the way this garden was growing but it's Jentry's garden so I didn't interfere except to tell her to pull the mint and replant or there would have been nothing here but mint.
This is my okra garden. The worst garden of the year. It was planted and replanted. The seeds were soaked overnight. The cardboard and wood chips brought in, the fence replaced. We worked very hard on this okra garden and it was nearly a failure but finally we are seeing some growth. The girls said the okra was slow last year as well so we are holding out hope. These plants are supposed to get 6 feet tall. They stayed at an inch forever. This was one of the first things we planted the end of May. There should be hundreds of them in here but there are maybe 20.
This is a grape vine in the okra garden. We planted it maybe 3 years ago and thought it died but this year it's looking good. I think we didn't water it enough and it did die but came back from the root when we watered this year.
Raspberries in back - garlic in front. The garlic will be ready to harvest soon. It's ready when the leaves die off.
This is the other side of the raspberries. If you would like to come pick some you are welcome to. There are a lot of weeds in there unfortunately. Those awful vines with white flowers.
This was a plant start (not seed) zucchini. Look closely and you will see some zucchini growing! YAY! This is our biggest zucchini by far.
This is it's neighbor, planted at the same time but not doing as well.
My basil plant looks much better! And these flowers do too.
The greens garden exploded. We had so many to pick! We can't keep up with them. Peppers in back.
Peppers.
These sunflowers came up from last year. I'm probably not going to let them come up here again. I would rather have them in the front by the road. I will try to transplant them this fall but I might fail.
More of the greens garden and peppers in back. The kale is closest in the photo.
Blurry peppers.
We let the weeds grow and I think this might be chamomile trying to come up. I put some loofah seeds in here but they are still very small and under these weeds now.
You can see the little loofah just to the right of this purplish leaf.
This horseradish is looking great but the one I transplanted I think is going to die. I didn't take it's photo because it looks really bad.
These are the bok choy seeds I planted real late. They are doing great but we still need to get them covered or they will get bug eaten.
Some of the random buckets we put seeds in. Not even sure what's coming up. Some are peppers, one is a dandelion. ha. They are too small to ever produce anything this year I'm afraid. I wish I had a green house I could put them in- they'd produce this fall.
Borage coming up between buckets.
PEAS!
Just looking down the rows of peas. I don't know if you can tell how tall the sunflower is already.
Leeks or onion or shallots.... we shall see.
Look at that purslane. I should pick it but I'm too impressed. Waiting to see if it flowers.
Something going to seed.
The borage came up in the tomatoes. I will probably harvest it soon but I love the flowers and so do the bees.TOMATOES!
beans
borage (blurry)
bean rows
I was hoping this would show how thick the sunflower stalk is.
nasturtium
Just stuff coming up everywhere - finally.
Flowering purslane. (yellow) Nor sure what the pink flowers are.
I think this is all the apples we are getting this year. Just these four.
Comfrey
Not sure. Either squash or pumpkin. Where do those labels go?
This is where we planted tomatoes which failed, then planted carrots, then replanted carrots and finally I planted buckwheat next to the carrots because I got tired of seeing bare ground. Carrots have finally showed up and buckwheat is doing great.
Buckwheat flowering.
See the poor little corn in back? :(
You know about the 3 sisters garden right? Well this here is the 3 mistake garden. It's corn, rhubarb, and borage. All doing well.
Orange tomatoes!
I'm gonna take a guess and say red currant. Do you know?
We have a lot of pumpkin that are slowly growing but at least they are not dying.
Not sure if this watermelon will ever produce anything.
These are red canas. They will get very tall red flowers. You have to dig them up in the fall because they are a tropical plant. I like them but I think we planted them too late and I'm growing tired of waiting for them to flower. I'm not going to dig them up again because I don't have room to store them over the winter in the house. If you want them you can come get them this fall. They are very pretty when they finally do flower! And they get very tall. (google them)
My anise hyssop is blooming now.
Fava beans. They came up quickly but haven't done much since. I'm an impatient gardener.
